The activities of Smadar's parents had a great influence over her development as a textile artist.
Smadar's father sold and repaired sewing machines in Israel and her mother sewed and knitted
all her clothes. These early experiences infused her with a love and appreciation for textiles,
colors, and beautiful handmade art. Smadar graduated from California State University, Northridge
with a degree in weaving and sculpture. At the same time, she obtained a degree in Judaic studies
from the University of Judaism. These two passions, her love of art and her heritage, are
incorporated into her work.
After painting with watercolors, Smadar discovered silk art and fell completely in love.
"Painting on silk is very much like painting on watercolor paper, except that you can wear
what you create, and you can feel the sensual fabric against your skin," she explains.
Smadar now paints on silk almost exclusively. Her inspiration comes from Nature and the
beauty all around us. Smadar's wearable one-of-a-kind art pieces include Chinese blouses,
long and short vests, kimonos, scarves, capes and ties. She also paints Judaic items,
such as custom talit, hallah covers and matzo covers as well as items such as wall art,
Chinese screens and wall hangings. She inspires her students with the love, passion
and skills she has mastered along the way.
Smadar has exhibited her beautiful work in numerous prestigious art galleries, such as
VIVA Gallery in Sherman Oaks California and fine art fairs and exhibitions, such as
Malibu Arts Festival, Calabasas Fine Arts Festival, American Arts Festival, Contemporary
Craft Market in Santa Monica, and The Design House for the New West Symphony Association
of Thousand Oaks, California. Her work has traveled across the world from Australia
to England, Israel and various places around the United States.
